Music production is the process of creating a recorded music project. A music producer oversees this whole process. Before many of your favorite artists such as Beyoncé, Adele and Drake lay down their vocals on a song, there is someone or group of people who have decided what instruments to use and the arrangements of the song. Music producers play a critical role in the creation of a song. Many of your favorite record producers today such as DJ Khaled, Pharrell, and Tay Keith didn’t begin as the great producers we know today. Creating the beats and melodies that your favorite singers and rappers place their vocals over isn’t an easy task. These producers had to learn what equipment works best for the genre of music they’re creating for and what equipment they’re more comfortable with/works best for them.

What Music Production Entails:

Music producers are vital when it comes to song creation. A music producer is just like the conductor of an orchestra. The choices made by the music producer can make or break a song. As a music producer, I have the job of deciding which artists will best suit the song, which instruments will be used, how those instruments are played, the notes sung and how the song will be arranged. After the artists lays down their vocals on the track the producers must then make alterations to the songs, make sure everything flows and decide if the song needs anything to be added. The hardest part of music producing is deciding whether to keep editing a song or leave it as is.

My Experience in Music Production:

The genres of music that I typically produce for Electronic Dance music (EDM), Hip Hop and R&B. When I first started producing, I mainly created EDM. I used a software called Cubase 8. Many music programs are called DAWS (digital audio workstations) and they all pretty much do the same thing. It depends on your preference of software and which works best for the genre you’re creating for. After using Cubase, I switched to Ableton Live because I personally found it better than Cubase. Since I’ve started producing, I have learned a great deal through experimenting on my own and from other producers.
