Within any industry, there is always the business aspect of that profession. The music production industry is no different. Every producer should know how to capitalize off their craft and know the right way of going about it. Knowing which sites to use, how to set their prices, how to collect your earnings and understanding royalties is important. In any industry, especially the music industry it is easy to be taken advantage of but I’ve learned a lot of important tips since I began in the industry.
Getting your Music Out to Artists
There are many different outlets and platforms that producers can use to get their beats out to artists. In today’s world many producers like to use online platforms, such as beat selling websites. Two major platforms include YouTube and BeatStars. One platform being YouTube. Many artists look for beats on YouTube by searching “Type Beats”. Producers label their music by putting Migos type beats or Da Baby type beats if the artist is looking for a certain style. Once an artist finds what they are looking for they can go to BeatStars to find what the producer’s prices are and whether the beat is being leased, sold or free. Many producers such as Cash Money AP, have had success with using this method.
The Legalities of Music Production
Royalties, Publishing, attorneys and managers are other components of the music industry that a producer must understand. Every producer should try to have both an attorney and manager. In my opinion, you should have an attorney before you have a manager. Publishing and Royalties ensure that you will continuously earn money from your beats over time after the artist or artists initially purchases the beat and also ensures that no one can take credit for your beats. Attorneys and managers help to ensure that you obtain your earnings from the artists that use the beats you produce.
When in music production, knowing the business side is fundamental. There are a lot of aspects that come with being a producer. Handling the business side and knowing the ins and outs will ensure that you will get your due diligence in the industry.
"It does not take a hit song just to make money from Royalties. You can still make money as long as you know how to monetize your set."
